The Public Works Department is responsible for many essential City services.

Included under Public Works oversight is Street and Sidewalk Maintenance, Animal and Vector Control, Building Inspections, Property Maintenance Code Enforcement, Park Maintenance, Tree Removal, Snow and Ice Removal, Street Sweeping, Trash and Yard Waste Removal, Sewer Lateral Repair Program, and Municipal Building Maintenance.

In addition, the Public Works Department applies for and manages grants from various agencies including Community Development Block Grants, Municipal Parks Grant Commission, St. Louis County Solid Waste Management Grants, and Metropolitan Sewer District Grants.

In 1999, the St. John City Council voted to pass the sewer lateral program where by a fund is created from a $28 per household annual assessement which is dedicated to the repairs of defective sewer laterals.

An application is available at St. John City Hall. Residents interested in seeking reimbursement for a sewer lateral repair should submit this application, filled out and accompanied by a CD (preferred) or videotape that clearly identifies the problem. The nature of the problem must meet the guidelines established by the City Council in order to qualify for reimbursement.
