National Drug Take Back Event

Saturday, October 28, 2017

10:00am – 2:00pm

On October 28, 2017, from 10am – 2pm, The St. John Police Department will sponsor another Drug Take Back Event in the lobby of the St. John Municipal Center, 8944 St. Charles Rock Road, St. John, MO  63114.  This is a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies focused on removing potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets. This national take-back day will provide a unified opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction and will bring national focus to the issue of pharmaceutical drug abuse. The program provides an opportunity for law enforcement, prevention, treatment and business communities to collaborate and establish a safe collection site for all Americans, regardless of where they reside.

The following are items you should know about what you can and can't bring to this event:

  • This event is for patients and their families to dispose of unwanted medications.
  • Controlled, non-controlled, and over the counter substances may be collected
  • Any solid dosage form pharmaceutical products (tablets, capsules, etc.) in consumer containers may be accepted. Small (pint size) bottles of cough syrups may be accepted IF they are sealed in their original container.  The container must already be sealed when brought in to the event.
  • No needles may be accepted. Intra-venous (IV) solutions, injectables, and syringes CANNOT be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.  For more information on needle disposal, click here
  • Inhalers and other compressed air cylinders CANNOT be accepted as they “pop” or explode at the incineration facility.
  • No questions or requests for identification will be made.
  • Pre-loaded syringes  can be accepted PROVIDED the needle has been removed by the patient BEFORE it is brought into the event.  We will NOT remove the needles at this event.  Epi Pens are acceptable since the needles are sheathed.
  • ALL Rx and OTC drugs are acceptable.  Therefore, veterinary drugs (Rx and over-the-counter (OTC) are also acceptable.  The species of the “consumer” does not matter.  However, this event will not take drugs from a veterinary clinic.  There are legal guidelines which they must abide by to destroy old and unused medicines.
  • You do not have to remove the Rx label from the vials before turning them in.  All medicines and containers will be incinerated therefore personal information will also be destroyed.

Should you have any questions regarding this event please do not hesitate

to contact the St. John Police Department, 427-8700  #5, M-F, 8am - 5 pm.
